Subject:RE: Mandated Reporting for ALL CITIZENS
Dear Sandy The Northern Territory in Australia is the only jurisdiction which currently mandates all adults to report suspected child abuse and neglect (and also all family and domestic violence) – see http://www.aifs.gov.au/cfca/pubs/factsheets/a141787/index.html. Despite this expansion in mandated notifiers, the Northern Territory still maintains the same pattern as other jurisdictions in Australia with regard to who is making notifications (i.e, predominantly police, education and health professionals) suggesting that the legislation has not had a large impact on community based reporting – see Appendices A3 and A4 of Child Protection Australia 2011-12 http://www.aihw.gov.au/WorkArea/DownloadAsset.aspx?id=60129542752 Associate Professor Ben Mathews from Queensland University of Technology http://staff.qut.edu.au/staff/matthewb/ is also leading comparative research of mandatory reporting across jurisdictions in Australia and hopefully can help with your enquiry Regards Fiona Professor Fiona Arney Director Australian Centre for Child Protection University of South Australia Level 2, Hawke Research Institute 20 Arthur Lemon Avenue Underdale, SA 5032 GPO Box 2471 Adelaide SA 5001 Ph 08 8302 2918 Fax 08 8302 2953 Mobile 0435962898 fiona.arney@unisa.edu.au www.unisa.edu.au/childprotection

I’m searching for pros/cons of requiring all citizens to report suspected child abuse and neglect. Any resources/research/opinion pieces would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Sandy
