My co-worker, Tom Hoeg (Thomas.Hoeg@ocfs.ny.gov ), who has worked extensively on both the issues of incarcerated women and their children and the effects of trauma on children, provided me with the following citations that might be helpful:
* Article on the effects of toxic stress during pregnancy: http://www.cfs.purdue.edu/ITSI/docs/briefs/EffectsToxic.pdf
* Article on prenatal glucocorticoids and long-term planning, but is actually understandable to a lay person:
http://www.eje-online.org/content/151/Suppl_3/U49.full.pdf
* Article, at a very simplified level, that describes the effects of maternal, including pre-birth, stress on children, but contains an extensive bibliography that might be useful: http://www.praynanapray.com/the-developing-brain-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-impact-of-ongoing-stress-on-a-childs-future

Hello Listmates,
I am a lawyer and am interested in learning more about the impact of toxic stress during pregnancy. I have two specific questions (and I'd really appreciate suggestions about things that I may be missing). First, I am interested to know if anyone could recommend an article, book chapter, etc., that could provide a good overview of the state of our knowledge about the impact of toxic stress during pregnancy for someone (i.e., a lawyer) who is not a researcher, etc.
Secondly, I am interested to know if there have been any studies looking at the impact of a woman's incarceration as a source or form of toxic stress and the impact that this particular stressor may have on the baby.
Thank you for any thoughts or leads you may be able to provide.
