Subject:Special issue on rural child maltreatment - call for papers

Hello colleagues: Brenda Smith and I are co-editing a special issue of Child Maltreatment on rural child maltreatment and child welfare. Please consider submitting a paper for consideration for inclusion in the special issue. The call for papers is available here: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/10775595251362005 And the text is available here: To address the need for rigorous research to understand rural child abuse and neglect and rural child welfare practice, Child Maltreatment announces a special issue of the journal dedicated to publishing high-quality empirical research (quantitative and/or qualitative) examining rural child maltreatment. We wish to consider a wide range of empirical papers that will build our knowledge base regarding child maltreatment in rural areas. While we welcome an array of articles that address rural child maltreatment, the following are examples of the topic areas we are seeking: (1) Understanding the prevalence of rural maltreatment and differences in its presentation compared to urban areas (2) Examining the causes and consequences of rural maltreatment (3) Investigating common conceptualizations of child maltreatment in rural areas (4) Estimating the impact of prevention programs or unique considerations for maltreatment prevention programs in rural areas (5) Exploring resilience following maltreatment in rural communities (6) Examining foster care in rural communities (7) Understanding child welfare practice in rural areas Questions regarding this special issue and the fit of particular topics should be addressed to Kathryn Maguire-Jack (kmjack@umich.edu ) and Brenda D. Smith (bsmith2@sw.ua . edu). The deadline for submitting manuscripts is January 31, 2026. All submitted manuscripts will undergo the regular peer review process. Please include a cover letter requesting consideration for publication in the special issue regarding “Rural Child Maltreatment and Child Welfare Practice.” Submissions should be full-length manuscripts, limited to 35 double-spaced pages, inclusive of abstract, references, tables, and figures. Supplementary Files are acceptable. Formatting must be in APA style, according to the CM’s submission requirements. Brief reports and systematic reviews will also be considered. Uninvited commentaries will not be considered. Additional submission guidelines may be found in the journal and at: https://cmx.sagpub.com/ . All manuscripts should be submitted to Child Maltreatment via the online portal ScholarOne Manuscripts at: https:// manuscriptcentral.com/childmaltreatment . First time users will need to create an account before submitting. Please follow the prompts in the Author Center to complete the submission. Thank you!
