Subject:Looking for Resources RE: Violence and Disabilities

Dear colleagues, Our team has been exploring what is known about preventing abuse of adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities and, in parallel but unrelated, how to prevent abuse of children in the context of sport. We are now interested in merging these topics to answer the question “What is known about violence against people with disabilities in the context of sport?” We’re looking for your help in identifying current literature and resources. We are looking to summarize what exists regarding violence and victimization for individuals with disabilities in the setting of sport. This includes physical disabilities and intellectual and developmental disabilities. Violence includes all forms of child abuse and neglect, bullying, exploitation, trafficking, harassment, and assault. We are interested in violence between peers (adult-adult or child-child) and between adults and children (e.g., coach and athlete). We are looking for scientific literature on the topic as well as any safeguarding policies, organizations working on this issue, documented procedures, or systems in place. A couple requests: 1. Would you mind sending any resources you have to this email or dortega@scienceofivolence.org ? 2. Would you please forward this request to your colleagues who may also know of resources? 3. Could you recommend any other organizations or persons who work in the disability or sport areas who we should contact? We’re happy to share what we find through this search. If you’d like to stay updated on our findings, subscribe to our newsletter. Best, Melissa Bright, PhD Founder and Executive Director Center for Violence Prevention Research scienceofviolence.org
